poor insulation like T-shirt in winterA t-shirt in a snowstorm? Having inadequate insulation levels in a home is akin to walking around outside in a T-shirt in a Connecticut winter.  By not properly insulating your home, you’re essentially leaving your house to weather the cold with only a T-shirt.  And your money through energy cost is at stake.

Why Would my House not be Properly Insulated?

For one thing, insulation doesn’t have the same “WOW" value as kitchen cabinetry or fancy bathroom appliances. When electricity and heating fuel were cheap, it made sense for builders to go light on insulation and reallocate this money in upscale visible features. Now that fuel is expensive, and continuing to get more costly, inadequate home insulation is going to start draining away your money. With the right home insulation upgrades, you can protect yourself from rising energy costs - turning these costs into home energy savings - and feel good about helping to preserve clean air.

insulated-thermosHome Insulation Really Works. A roll of fiberglass insulation or a handful of cellulose insulation may not look like much, but these insulating materials can make a large difference in how your home retains heat during the winter and cool air during the summer. Think of how long coffee stays hot when stored in an insulated thermos. That’s how your home’s insulation can work for you.

During the summer month's in Connecticut, proper insulation is just as important for energy savings. Adding more insulation helps save money on air conditioning and also makes your home more comfortable during hot weather.

Higher Fuel Costs = Faster Payback on Home Insulation

If you’re undecided about adding more insulation now, think how you’ll feel when fuel prices shoot up again. No matter how you heat and cool your home, the same rule applies: energy upgrades pay for themselves faster as energy costs go up, because there's more money to be saved.

What “R” you talking about? The “R” in R-value stands for resistance to heat flow. The higher the R-value, the higher the resistance and greater the insulating value. When talking about insulation, R-value is typically expressed in two ways:

  • R-value per inch. Insulation is manufactured from different materials and in different thicknesses. Manufacturers rate their products in terms of R-value per inch, so multiplying the material’s R-value per inch by the thickness will give you….
  • Overall or total R-value. This number is used as a measure of the total insulation value. It’s also used to describe the insulation value of a complete building structure, such as a wall that would include studs, plywood sheathing, siding, insulation and drywall.

Thermographic imagery to measure your home's insulation efficiency. The Climate Partner's technician that will come to your house can use thermographic imagery to measure how effective your house insulation is working, even when the insulation can’t be seen. A special camera provides a picture of a wall, ceiling, or other area that reveals temperature differences by color changes.

How Much Insulation, What & Where?

The general rule of thumb is: The colder your climate, the more insulation you need. Climate Partners insulation contractors will show you how the current levels of insulation in your house compare with insulation levels recommended by Energy Star and the U.S. Dept. of Energy for homes in Connecticut (see the map below).

There are many different types of insulation (see the Insulation Materials chart on the Dr. Energy Saver web site). Some of the more popular include fiberglass, cellulose and spray foam insulation. Factors such as availability, affordability and suitability will determine what types are best for your home. Based on Dr. Energy Saver's findings, as well as our proprietary ABC approach, we will recommend and install insulation upgrades in critical areas of your house shell.

Climate Partners, a Dr. Energy Saver franchise, is a home insulation contractor company, serving all of Connecticut, including Fairfield, New Haven, Litchfield, Middlesex, New London, Hartford, Tolland and Windham counties, CT.  Call or contact us online for a Free Insulation Installation Estimate and Inspection.
