Tankless Water Heaters

OK, we know tankless hot water heaters blow "tank-type" models out of the water in terms of energy efficiency and energy savings. But there’s a new tank-type hot water heater on the market, that can hold its own with tankless models: the heat pump water heater.

This water heater has a small heat pump that works just as well as larger heat pumps used to heat entire houses. A refrigerant picks up heat from the surrounding air and a compression cycle increases the temperature to heat water in the tank. If necessary, regular electric heating elements in the tank can give backup heating power.

Tank-style Water Heaters Are An "Old Technology"

A traditional tank-style hot water heater is really nothing more than a big metal tub of water that gets heated by electricity or fossil fuel. When you open a tap or use hot water in your home, water travels through hot water supply pipes to you. At the same time, cold water flows into your tank to replace the heated water that just left. The larger your hot water tank, the more hot water you can use before running out.

Tank-style water heaters represent old-fashioned technology that hasn’t changed much. Your water heater normally has a 5-10-year manufacturer’s warranty, which is about the life expectancy before problems may start to develop. Even a hot water heater that’s 15 years old can provide plenty of hot water and appear to be in good operating condition, but looks can be deceiving. It's probably wasting energy because of inadequate insulation and low efficiency, plus there may be problems inside that you can’t see.
