Tankless Water Heaters Blow
Tank-type Heaters out of the Water
OK, so we know that tankless water heaters blow
tank-type models out of the water in terms of energy efficiency
and energy savings. But there’s a new tank-type
water heater on the market that can hold its own with tankless
models: the heat pump water heater. This type of water heater
contains a small air-source heat pump that works just like the
larger heat pumps used to heat entire houses. A refrigerant
picks up heat from the surrounding air and a compression cycle
further increases the temperature to heat water in the tank.
If necessary, regular electric heating elements in the tank can
provide backup heating power.
A heat pump water heater is about twice as efficient
as a standard electric water heater, so it’s definitely worth
considering if your existing tank-type heater needs to be retired.
Climate Partners can provide more details on this innovative
water heater. Call or schedule a Free Water Heater Estimate and Inspection in Connecticut.
Tank-style Water Heaters Represent Old Technology
A traditional tank-style water heater is really nothing more than a big metal
container of water that gets heated by either electrical elements or fossil fuel.
When you open a tap or use hot water in your home, water you’ve paid to heat
travels through hot water supply pipes to its point of use. At the same time, cold
water flows into your tank to replace the heated water that just left. The larger
your hot water tank, the more hot water you can use before running out.
Tank-style water heaters represent old-fashioned technology that hasn’t
changed much in decades. Your water heater normally has a 5-10-year
manufacturer’s warranty, which is about the life expectancy before problems can
start to develop. Even a water heater that’s 15 years old can still provide plenty
of hot water and appear to be in good operating condition, but looks can be
deceiving. It is probably wasting energy because of inadequate insulation, and low
efficiency plus there may be problems inside that you can’t see.
